As modular network switches, Cisco Catalyst 4500 switches are ideal for mid-range enterprise environments, small to medium businesses and Metropolitan Ethernet customers. A highly versatile, chassis-based Cisco switch option, the Catalyst 4500 functions as an intelligent switching platform that ensures resiliency, security and operational control for converged networks. The Cisco Catalyst 4500 also offers flexibility, with four different chassis configurations available, equipped with either 3, 6, 7 or 10 slots. While they may differ in terms of slots and sizes, Cisco switches within the Catalyst 4500 series offer consistency through a common set of power supplies and line cards. This feature actually allows for further flexibility because it enables the various configurations of the Catalyst 4500 switch to be highly adaptable since they have many components in common. Additional benefits include operational efficiency, high application performance, comprehensive automation and zero-touch provisioning. One of the great aspects of Catalyst 4500 switches is its Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which enables the Cisco network switch to deliver high densities of electrical power. In fact, the Cisco Catalyst 4500 can be equipped with up to 240 ports of full 30 watt PoE, ensuring the network switches reaches its maximum performance potential. Not all Catalyst 4500 switches are alike though, and the Catalyst 4500 product line features two different classes of switches, the classis series and the E-series. The E-series is the newest line of Catalyst 4500 switches and differs from the classic series in several ways, especially with new chassis, supervisor engine and line card technologies. However, the entire 4500 series, including X4516 and C4503, provides advantages such as backward and forward compatibility for legacy systems and to prepare for new and developing technologies, complete life cycle management, exceptional versatility for layer 2 through layer 4 applications, and high availability.
