IBM HS20 Bladeserver is a 2-socket system that installs into any IBM BladeCenter Chassis and provides low cost and easily replaceable computing. A popular solution from its release in 2002 right up through today, the IBM HS20 blade still offers computing power at an economical price. Each model of HS20 is comparable its 1U rackmount counterpart. They offer either one or two single or dual-core processors with 512MB or 1GB of memory standard; this can be expanded up to 16GB for higher memory demand.

The HS20 allows for up to two internal, non-hot-swappable, Ultra320 SCSI hard drives for storage. Integrated dual Gigabit Ethernet ports come standard along with one PCI-X adapter slot.  Processor speeds for this blade range from 2.0GHz to 3.8GHz with a front side bus speed of 400MHz, 533MHz, and 800MHz along with a cache size of 512KB, 1MB or 2MB.

For a fraction of the price of what it would cost to have a rack of 14 servers connected through 28 power supplies, 28 Ethernet connections, and cables running all over the place; the IBM BladeCenter HS20 can consolidate power consumption and maybe most importantly, real estate from 14 U’s down to as little as a 7U space.  Overall, manageability is condensed on all of these systems to a single point of contact for system administration.

When budget and space matter, no technology is wasted on an IBM Bladecenter Chassis with HS20 blades installed.  They are the precursor to most blade server platforms out there today and are still being utilized worldwide!
