Sun SPARC M5000 Servers
The Sun SPARC M5000 is the powerhouse of the Sun M-Series server family. Even though the Sun M5000 offers many of the same features, it expands upon them and takes them to the next level of performance. For example, the Sun SPARC M5000 server offers the highest amount of memory capacity, with up to 256 Gigabytes (GB), as well as the highest amount of processors, with the option of up to 8 dual or quad core SPARC64 processors. Other examples of the high-capacity capabilities offered by Sun M5000 servers include the option of up to 10 I/O slots – in a combination of 8 PCI- Express (PCIe) slots and 2 PCI-eXtended (PCI-X) slots – or, by means of an optional external I/O expansion unit, all the way up to 50 I/O slots. This is amazing, given that the other servers within the Sun M series can only offer a maximum of 25 I/O slots – just half of what the M5000 can do!
And what can the Sun SPARC M5000 do with these amazing capabilities? Well, since they are designed for the mission-critical applications of mid-range enterprise IT environments, Sun M5000 servers are particularly well-suited for applications including consolidation/virtualization projects, medium to large-sized databases, engineering and science applications, and many more. Some other features of the M5000 servers that make them so ideal for these applications include mainframe reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS), 100% binary compatibility with earlier application versions, exceptional and affordable scalability with zero forklift upgrades and pre-installation with Oracle Solaris 10 operating system (OS). The Oracle Solaris 10 OS provides the Sun M5000 server with additional advantages such as User and Process Rights Management, Dynamic Tracing (DTRACE), an IP filter, and crypto-graphic infrastructures.
