As 1U rack-mountable servers, the Sun Fire X4100 M2 series provides space-efficiency as well as energy-efficiency, speed and reliability. Since the X4100 M2 servers are x86 servers this means that they have been designed based of off an x86 open architecture. x86 servers are characterized by several features, which include 64 bit capabilities, exceptional availability, and backwards compatibility. Some specific features of the Sun Fire X4100 M2 series servers that make them stand out and not be just another x 86 rack server include support for RAID 0 and RAID 1, a built-in remote management adapter, 2-way server scalability and 2 hot-swappable bays. Designed for use in enterprise IT environments, further features of Sun X4100 M2 servers include 4 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports, an integrated graphics controller and an integrated network adapter.

Breaking down some of the central components of Sun Fire X4100 M2 servers, one of the most crucial is the type of processors. X4100 M2 servers are equipped with either 1 or 2 dual or quad-core AMD Opteron processors, which feature one Megabyte (MB) level 2 cache per core. In addition to the processors, the Sun X4100 M2 rack servers are configured with 4 Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) slots per Central Processing Unit (CPU) socket. This means that X4100 M2 servers feature 8 total DIMM slots, which adds up to 16 Gigabytes (Gb) per CPU socket. Furthermore, Sun Fire X4100 M2 servers offer 2 internal, low-profile 8-lane PCI-Express (PCIe) slots, as well as 2.5” hot-swappable Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) internal disks, up to 2 Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) with DVD-ROM/CD-RW and up to 4 HDDs without DVD-ROM/CD-RW.  Last but not least, the X4100 M2 servers offer a 4 channel SAS interface that only allows for internal access, meaning no external access allowed.
