The Dell PowerVault MD1000 is a modular disk storage expansion enclosure that is designed for use with the Dell PowerEdge server product line. Configured to hold up to 15 Large Form Factor (LFF) disk drives in a 3U rackmount form factor, Dell Power Vault MD1000 arrays offer support and even mix and match capabilities for multiple drive types including Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), Near-Line SAS (NL-SAS) and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) for up to 30TB of disk storage capacity. However, the Dell MD1000 array can be expanded for additional disk storage capacity by way of daisy chaining 3 MD1000’s together for a hard disk drive (HDD) capacity of up to 45 HDDs. There are many different SAS, NL-SAS and SATA disk drive capacities to choose from, but for the highest maximum capacity the PowerVault MD1000 expansion enclosure should be filled with 7.2K or 5.4K SATA 2TB disk drives.

As direct-attached storage (DAS), there are several other advantages that the Dell PowerVault MD1000 array can offer your enterprise datacenter in addition to its primary function of adding disk storage capacity. Featuring x4 3 Gigabyte (GB) SAS host connectivity, Dell MD1000 DAS arrays offer support for multiple Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) levels including RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, and RAID 50 with a PERC 5/E controller, and RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, RAID 50 and RAID 60 with a PERC 6/E controller. Other advantages of PowerVault MD1000 expansion enclosures include the option of unified mode or split mode-dual host access, as well as the capacity for up to 30 physical disk drives per group but up to 256 virtual disk drives per group and the option of 1 or 2 hot-pluggable management modules.
